City of Houston | Downtown Fire Station #8

This fire station encompassing 22,000 sq ft. replaces two fire stations that were demolished in the downtown Houston area. It serves a crew size of approximately 30 firefighters and includes eight apparatus bays. The living and office accommodations are appropriate for a double-sized staff and include a large kitchen with a central island, double oven, and 4 refrigerators (1 for each shift). Additional features include a lounge with television and coffee bar access, 3 offices for the chief and captains with private sleeping quarters, a 20-bed dorm, 3 locker facilities (including one for turnout gear), a clean room, hose storage, a computer study room, radio communications, exercise room, and a 50? radio tower.

The building was designed in a historical vocabulary to respect the historical buildings that were demolished. The new Fire Station was designed under the LEED system of certifying green buildings. The project was completed in 2007.
